Disappointing Photos

Do you own a fancy camera but feel that your photos could be SO MUCH BETTER? Are you frustrated when they turn out blurry, too dark, too bright, or just not how you'd hoped?

Complete Camera Confusion

Do you want to master the important controls, without having to wade through the whole of the manual? Has all that technical jargon scrambled your brain so you've left the camera on Auto?

Information Overload

You've disappeared down a million YouTube rabbit holes trying to understand which button does what and why! There's so much information out there - how can you tell which is good or bad?

AA

Imagine How Great it Would be to Have ...

A guaranteed repeatable system at your fingertips for operating your camera confidently and with ease - whatever the subject you were photographing?

A system that gave you the freedom to concentrate on taking amazing photos instead of being constantly bamboozled by all those buttons and dials?

AA

Let's Make it Happen!

The main reason so many people get frustrated with their cameras is that there's way too much information out there, and more controls than you could ever hope to use. Let me simplify things for you!

BECAUSE - you don't need to know EVERYTHING - the secret is to just learn the right things in the right order; not even the professionals use every single control on their cameras - that would be crazy!

I'll walk you step by step through how to use your camera easily, without the overwhelm and I promise not to use boring jargon or tech-speak!

By the End of the Workshop You Will ...

1. Be Able to Focus With Precision & Intent

No more shots where the wrong thing's in focus!

2. Know How to Nail Your Exposure

Say goodbye to photos that are accidentally too bright or too dark.

3. Have Mastered the Blurry Background

From plants to portraits to wildlife, selectively blurring the background is one of the best ways to make your pictures look more professional, and I'll show you exactly how to do this, and what mistakes to avoid.

4. Know How to Capture Subject Movement in Different Ways

Freeze or blur your subject's movement by using the right controls.

5. Understand How to Find the Right Light

Because light is the most important ingredient in photography. I'll show you how to use it in different ways.

6. Have Liberated Your Camera from Auto Forever

You'll no longer be at a loss as to what setting to use. Instead, you'll have the confidence to set your camera up properly and start using it like a professional.

Wait! Is This Photography Workshop Right for You?

YES IF:

You're a camera newbie who's stuck on auto and can't get the results you want

You've tried reading the manual, but just can't get to grips with all that technical language

And the same goes for all those YouTube rabbit holes that have sucked you in and wasted your time!

You'd like expert feedback and someone to guide you when you get stuck

You don't want to waste any more of your precious time struggling to work this stuff out for yourself

NO IF:

You can confidently shoot in semi-automatic or manual modes

You're happy with the standard of your photography

You're looking for a workshop that specialises in a particular genre (e.g. wildlife, sport, fashion, street photography). All these things are fantastic to learn, but understanding your camera should always come first

You want to learn about Photoshop or Lightroom. There are lots of courses out there that cover post-production, but as I said above, camera mastery definitely comes first!

You want to learn how to use the video function on your camera

You're interested in flash or studio photography

Here's How it Works

My photography workshops and 1-1 training sessions take place in central Guildford. There's plenty of time for questions and for me to help everyone with their cameras. PLUS - you'll get a copy of all my slides from the day, a crib sheet for your particular camera settings and 1 week's email feedback and advice.

We'll be based partly indoors at a lovely venue, and then (weather permitting) we'll head outdoors to practise our camera settings in the beautiful grounds of Guildford castle.

And to keep you energised, there'll be plenty of refreshments and tasty treats!

MEET YOUR TEACHER

I'm Anna Saverimuttu, and in case you're wondering about my surname, it's Sri Lankan - the other half of me is Malaysian!

I've been a professional photographer for over 20 years, and have also helped hundreds of confused beginners just like you to get their cameras off Auto so they can really start to enjoy their photography. You can read some of their testimonials at the bottom of this page.

I love (in no particular order) second-hand bookshops, long walks, the sea, old buildings, The Repair Shop (how I LOVE that programme!), baking, Earl Grey tea, and cats! I'm also a firm believer in saying "no" to anything that doesn't bring me joy - life is too short.

Student Success Stories

"I cannot praise Anna enough for providing a very well presented training session that has left me feeling confident and inspired to continue taking images with my new Canon SLR.  Highly recommend to anyone who needs some training on how to get around their SLR. Anna is warm and welcoming! I can't wait to find out about other courses."
"I feel as if I have gone from knowing absolutely nothing about how my camera works to knowing a huge amount. Really enjoyed it."
"I just wanted to thank you again for your terrific course on Saturday. I enjoyed it so much and got exactly what I came for: the confidence that comes from understanding how good photos are taken. You demystified the core concepts that had been holding me back for so long. Early days but I know photography will free me up as a writer and be a great creative outlet. Thanks again and keep me on the newsletter."
"Brilliant intro to manual settings and the basics of how the camera actually works and deals with light etc. Nice speed, lots of examples which help illustrate the different effects. Useful to be able to practice outside as well."
"Hi Anna, I want to thank you again for my introduction to photography today, I thoroughly enjoyed it! I started as I mean to go on, and took some shots when I got home. You've completely revolutionised my whole approach. This doesn't mean I've got that Countryfile picture yet, but you've totally helped me understand  how to approach a subject. Thank you once again."
"I have moved from zero to having a clear understanding of cause and effect. Very comfortable venue and easy access to places to photograph"
"Dear Anna, thank you so much for today's session. I have learnt a great deal - the fog has lifted! You have made everything so very much clearer than it had been before 10am this morning! I had a spring in my step as I walked to the car park. Thank you again."
"An amazing workshop. Thank you so much. Clear, precise and excellent. A fantastic and inspiring teacher. I would love to attend another workshop. You are an amazing teacher."
"A very belated thank you for a fantastic morning last week. I was even able to explain everything to my husband and he understood! Just had my first solo foray into the butterfly house at Wisley and shocked my children with the results (only used manual mode as well!)"
"I just wanted to say a big thank you for the workshop. I really enjoyed it. It wasn't too overwhelming and I can't wait to get out there to practise what we learnt.  I like the idea that you can be more creative using the manual setting... so no more automatic setting for me! Very professional presentation. It was exactly what I needed. Thank you!"
"I feel I now know the key areas to actually invest in my photos by finally having control - it's inspired me to invest further in my photography. Really easy to absorb, good pace and great quality. A really helpful mix of practice and theory - the technical side of the camera as well as composition."
"Excellent. A lovely setting, very relaxed teaching. Very patient! A thoroughly enjoyable morning! 10/10. I feel I have learned an enormous amount today in terms of understanding how cameras work and what we are looking to achieve when taking a photo. Thank you! Feeling excited about practising."
"I feel that I have learned much quicker today than using books/YouTube videos and tutorials because I could ask questions directly. I feel confident that I can move forward and improve. Excellent examples provided in the presentation slides. The small group allowed for all of us to have the opportunity to ask questions."
"Really enjoyed it. A good introduction into photography. Very good, useful notes, nice mixture of teaching and practice. Lovely to walk around the town."
"I have learned so much! I feel I now have an understanding of the basics - practical and theoretical - to begin to really use my camera. A superb mixture of theory and practical. Great pace and variety."
"I feel I can now go away and start to take better pics! Very easy to take in, not rushed. I shall be telling my friends about your workshop. Thank you!"
"Have learned loads. Just looked at yesterday's iPhone photos compared to today's! Very interesting thinking about the light."
"I have a good understanding of the basics now and can move forward with photography for taking "moving" shots and interesting stills of flowers etc. The material given was of a good standard and clear in the way it was taught. The venue was easy to get to, the car park was nearby and the room was cosy and comfortable."
"I have learned a great deal more than I could have imagined!"
"I have learned a lot. Manual mode has been a revelation. Plenty of  material to illustrate what was being taught."
"I thought the way you taught was efficient and informative, and you explained very well. You were patient, understanding and made the whole time enjoyable."
"I have learned an enormous amount! I feel more confident to use different settings on my camera and look forward to experimenting. The material was excellent. Easy to understand and I felt comfortable asking questions."
"Just a quick email to say thanks again for today. I really enjoyed the course and great to get back to the basics of photography. The practical session was very good, to put theory into practice. I shall shoot with more confidence and understanding now!"
"I have learnt lots! Everything I've learnt has been new, so thank you!"
"I have learned so much!! Total lightbulb moment. Thank you."
"I have learned far more than I thought I would and more importantly learned how to practice. Very professional. Delivered in focused blocks, Pitched perfectly."

FAQ'S

If you can't find the answer to your question below, then please feel free to email me at anna@annasaverimuttu.co.uk or call me on 01483 571119, and I'll be happy to help!

What sort of camera do I need?

A DSLR, mirrorless or bridge camera is fine for my workshops - smaller compact point-and-shoot cameras have more limited functions, so won't be suitable. Not sure what camera you have? Get in touch at anna@annasaverimuttu.co.uk.

How long do your workshops last?

Each workshop lasts approximately 4 hours. During the first part, we'll go through the key controls on your camera in an easy, jargon-free way, so you know exactly what they do and how to access them. Then we'll move onto practical training to help familiarise you with taking photos of different subjects and scenarios off the auto setting.

When and where are the sessions held?

Photography workshops are held on weekday mornings at a venue in central Guildford. The venue may change depending on availability for that day, but it will always be in the town centre and information will be provided well in advance of each workshop.

I've only just got my camera. Are your courses suitable for complete beginners?

Yes, they most definitely are! Even if you've only just taken your camera out of its box, this training will really set you up for success without you having to waste time trying to figure things out on your own.

Can I buy a workshop place as a gift for someone else?

Of course! But please note that the early bird price only applies if you book them onto a specific date; if you want a voucher for a future workshop for which dates haven't yet been announced, this can be bought at the full price. I'll also need to know the make and model of the recipient's camera to ensure the workshop is suitable for them. Just let me have all the details and I can email you an e-gift voucher for you to send or print out.

What happens if I need to reschedule or cancel?

All places are non-refundable and non-transferable.

If I need to reschedule your session you may either choose to attend a future workshop at no extra cost or request a full refund of your session fee.

In the unlikely event that I need to cancel the workshop, then you will be entitled to a full refund.

What happens if the weather's bad?

Unless the weather's really bad (heavy snow or storms), then we'll still go ahead. There'll be plenty of space to practise indoors, and even if it's raining a bit, we should still be able to get outdoors for at least some of the time.
